Launched in 1992, Montpeliers (Edinburgh) Limited is unquestionably the most dynamic and forward thinking style bar/restaurant group in Scotland. With eight cutting edge bars all based in Edinburgh’s city centre, we attract those looking for a premium food and drink offering. Over the past fourteen years, the group has gone from strength to strength and has won many awards for outstanding service, quality and operational expertise within the industry.




1992 Montpeliers (Edinburgh) Limited is formed when Montpeliers Bar Bistro opens. This is followed by the opening of our café bar Iguana (renamed Assembly after a £250k refurbishment in 2003).

1996 Bar/restaurant Indigo Yard opens in Edinburgh’s West End.

1997 Montpeliers Training Centre is opened to provide our own recruits with the highest standards of training possible.

1998 Montpeliers is awarded a LEEL license to train SVQ’s, enabling the company to train employees from external companies, as well as our own sites, to SVQ standard.
Stuart Ross, Chief Executive of Belhaven Breweries, is appointed as non-executive chairman of the company.

2000 With the turning of the century, we turn our arm to event management and the running of the event spaces at the Caledonian Brewery. Since then we have added many major events to our repertoire including the MTV Awards VIP Party in Ocean Terminal in 2003, the bars at Musselburgh Racecourse, The Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens and The Spiegel Garden which houses the Famous Spiegeltent during the Edinburgh Festival.

2000 Rick’s - a stylish bar and restaurant with 10 contemporary rooms - opens in Frederick Street. Rick’s has since been voted one of the world’s top 25 hot hotels by Conde Nast Traveller.

2002 Opal Lounge opens on George Street. A bar/restaurant/night club renowned for its style, image and success throughout the UK, Opal has a turn over in excess of £5M per year.

2003 Montpeliers begins an exciting partnership with The Famous Spiegeltent, and begin the August institution that is the Spiegel Garden, a truly buzzing venue at the heart of the festival action.

2005 Montpeliers take over one of Edinburgh’s best loved bars, the vibrant Candy Bar on George Street. A vibrant spot for partying, great music and flowing cocktails!

Montpeliers gets awarded Investors in People status for continual development and training of its staff.

2006 June arrives and we launch Tigerlily our boutique hotel with restaurant and bars at 125 George Street. Autumn arrives and so does Lulu our glamorous club that nestles just below Tigerlily.



In all of our existing outlets we aim to retain and further increase sales, in what is now an extremely competitive market. We do this not only by offering and maintaining a consistently high quality environment and internal atmosphere but also achieving the highest possible standards of customer service.
